☼ When - Death In The Blue Lake [1988] ☼

In 1988 When released Death in the Blue Lake, inspired by Norwegian author André Bjerke's psychological horror novel of the same name. The album had a strong atmosphere of fear and mourning, and was quite popular in Norwegian black metal circles. An excerpt from the album's A-side was commissioned as an intro to Satyricon's Dark Medieval Times "Walk the path of sorrows". The B-side of the album is an amalgamation of ethnic music, blues harmonica, coughing, psychedelic pop and glissandi effects. Today it is almost impossible to track down a copy of the album.

Recorded February and March 1988 at Cluster Studios, Oslo.

This release was done mostly in the Music A Matic Studio, during January-February 1987 in Gothenburg, except "Witchwood" and "War Fields" in October 1985,and parts of "New Water" in January 1983 in Oslo. The record starts off as a moody noir horror film score, but explodes into a spastic new wave freakout, with chopped up drum machine and moody vocals. The record continues in that direction, wavering between creepy soundscapes and dark stuttery pop songs, utilising all sorts of bizarre samples, drum machines, synthesizers, piano and found sounds with mumbled monotone vocals.Bizarre.

note :: "Karius & Baktus" is based on the famous fairytale by Torbjorn Egner.

When is the brainchild of composer/percussionist/keyboardist Lars Pedersen. A monument in Norwegian avant-garde, His origins date back to the late 70's with his work in the legendary experimentalist band Holy Toy. Pedersen has produced a far-ranging body of work, running the gamut from dense, dissonant orchestral music to sample-based collages to Beach Boys-inspired psychedelic pop. He has reached a plateau many cannot attest to. His extremely illustrative aural stylistics which spans the universe of cut up/collage design manipulating everything from folk/ethnic, RIO [Rock In Opposition], cartoon schizophrenia, poignant soundscape, hypnotic minimalism, massive industrial/factory environment, adherent pop and intense orchestrative content have not even approached limitations. Given this range of sounds and styles, When's music is remarkable for its avoidance of the distanced, post-modern pastiche approach favored by numerous other avant-garde collagists, instead demonstrating a darker, more morbid stance, which is evidenced throughout his catalog. When remains as visceral and seemingly arbitrary as it began, granting its listeners passports to limitless space and time...
